CBD oil and Parkinson’s disease

CBD oil and Parkinson’s disease: Parkinson’s disease also has the name PD. This is a neurodegenerative disease that takes place when the person loses dopamine-producing brain cells. These cells are responsible for controlling our movements and mood swings. Tremors, stiffness and slowness of movement with anxiety and depression are the symptoms of PD.

No cure for PD has been discovered yet. However, people can manage it by using medicines. Although, these medicines have side effects like dizziness, nausea, or even compulsive behaviours. Studies suggest that CBD has therapeutic benefits for patients with PD.

The studies of CBD oil:

CBD has demonstrated anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective and antioxidative properties. Clinical trials have proved these therapeutic properties of CBD. Both oxidative stress and inflammation have their huge role as far as Parkinson’s disorder is concerned.

A study wrote in the Journal of Psychopharmacology back in 2020. This study indicated that CBD has the ability to decrease anxiety in patients who are suffering from PD. This study has also indicated that CBD is so helpful in managing motor symptoms.

A review wrote in Frontiers in Pharmacology back in 2018. This review suggests that CBD plays a vital role as a preventive of the illness.

Another study wrote in the Journal of Psychopharmacology back in 2014. This study indicated that CBD helps improve the life quality of PD patients.

Patient perspectives having CBD for Parkinson’s:

Patients with PD share their experiences of using CBD oil to treat the symptoms associating with this disease. One of the contributed improved motor functions.  “We’ve been trying drops under the tongue for the last couple of weeks with my father to help him sleep at night. Not used consistently enough to see if it’s helping yet, but my mother notices some reduction in his hand tremors.

Another was that CBD becomes more effective when you take it with THC. “I don’t use CBD for my tremors (they are very minor unless I’m in a lot of pain or stressing out) but I use it for muscle rigidity and pain. I personally do not find CBD as effective as THC, but I do use both.”

An individual living with Parkinson’s disease shared his observations on a forum maintained by Parkinson.org after using CBD (without THC) for a month.

“Over the past month, I’m losing some of the benefits that I was getting during the first week. But the fact remains that a noticeable level of improvement has persisted. I really need help with anxiety, agitation, anger issues, autonomic nerve deficiencies, and many other non-movement type things. I think and hope that the CBD oil is helping.”

Opinion of experts of treating Parkinson’s with CBD

Fernanda F. Peres is the leading author of a 2018 review of CBD as a treatment for Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders, published in “Frontiers in Pharmacology. Peres says that CBD holds strong potential in the treatment of PD.

“We have data pointing to CBD’s beneficial effects on non-motor symptoms. Using CBD in addition to antiparkinsonian medications is a future possibility, in my opinion.”

He pointed out that medicines used to treat PD (carbidopa and levodopa) help improve motor symptoms. But these medicines have severe side effects. Psychotic symptoms of involuntary movements are such side effects.

He is of the view, “Considering the neuroprotective effects of CBD, it might not be beneficial after extensive neurodegeneration. We speculate that future improvements in PD diagnosis criteria will lead to earlier diagnosis and expand CBD’s benefits for PD patients. CBD is a molecule with multiple mechanisms of action, not all of them fully elucidated.”

Conclusion:

CBD oil and Parkinson’s disease: CBD helps to improve the quality of both sleep and life as far as Parkinson’s disease is concerned. Much more research and clinical trials are needed to understand the functionality of CBD.
